A.6  Matched filter and Cauchy-Schwarz’s inequality

Proving the matched filter is analogous to the following problem: given a vector x, what is the vector y that maximizes the inner product x,y? The Cauchy-Schwarz’s inequality states that:

|x,y|2 x,xy,y.
(A.19)

Because x,x = x2, taking the square root of Eq. (A.19), leads to |x,y|x y. Hence, the inner product x,y = xycos (𝜃) assumes its maximum value x y when 𝜃 = 0 or 180 degrees, which corresponds to the vector y and x being colinear.
